LAN and WAN

A LAN (Local Area Network) is a network on one site. The connecting hardware is owned by the same organisation that owns the network. LANs allow an organisation to have complete control over its data.

A WAN ( Wide Area Network ) covers a large geographical area, possibly even the whole world.
The Internet is the biggest WAN. The connection will include hardware and services provided by another company, e.g. telecoms companies. In some cases , the company uses a leased line where it pays for exclusive use of connections.
